Broadband

The primary objective of all the RBCs, and E2BN is no exception, is the provision of broadband links (>2Mbps in both directions) to all schools in the 11 member Authorities. The LAs themselves manage the delivery of the connection from their own networks to their schools while E2BN is responsible for the "back-haul" from the LA to the E2BN Core and all the services that run over this major private network (see below) including the internet feed, interconnection between LAs and other RBCs, and to the JANET academic network. The E2BN Core is currently housed at the Easynet hosting centre in Brick Lane, London.

Caching

E2BN manage a distributed caching service which is integrated with the web filtering service (see below). There is central caching available at the Core and each LA taking the web filtering service also receives local caching.

DNS

E2BN supplies a DNS service for all member LAs. The management of the DNS service is distributed so that LAs can manage the DNS entries for their own schools (.sch.uk). If schools have a problem with their DNS entry or wish to have changes made they should contact their LA in the first instance.

e-mail

E2BN does not currently supply a stand-alone email service for its members as most LAs do this locally. However, both the VLE suppliers we have contracts with (Netmedia and Digitabrain) provide integrated email systems with all accounts.

Flashmeeting

Flashmeeting is a low-cost, entry level Video-Conferencing system developed by the Open University. The original design aim was to create a simple to use VC system using webcams and with low bandwidth requirements. While not suitable for many-many conferences it is an excellent introduction to VC requiring few technical resources to set up and can be used for face-to-face meetings with multiple participants and for remote presenter to classroom situations. E2BN have a dedicated Flashmeeting server installed in the Core which is available for all schools in the region to use. Go to the Multiclass site for more information.

NEN Interconnect

E2BN, and all the other RBCs, connect to the UKERNA/JANET network which provides a highly resilient, high bandwidth, private interconnection between all the RBC network. This combined network is known as the National Education Network (NEN).

Pilots

E2BN have run various pilot projects over their lifetime and most have then subsequently developed into production services (e.g. caching, web-filtering, video-conferencing). In addition E2BN can provide technical expertise and equipment to work with member LAs on their own pilot projects: we are currently hosting pilot installations of Moodle for Suffolk CC.

Security

E2BN, in partnership with Easynet, provide security within the E2BN core down to the LA networks. All internet traffic is fire-walled and both VLE providers have anti-virus and anti-spam measures in place.

Video Conferencing

E2BN provide a dedicated video conferencing network which is avaiable to all schools. We have a contract for the VC Network management with Videonations who, along with Internet Video Communications, have a framework contract to supply VC equipment and services to school in our region. Go to the Multiclass site for more information.

VLE/MLE/Learning Platforms

E2BN has framework contracts with both Netmedia and Digitalbrain for the provision of VLEs to schools in the region. As part of the contract all teachers in the region entitled to free accounts on either (or both!) systems: idea for testing and evaluation before committing to a whole school implementation.

We are keeping an eye on the developing learning platform agenda and can offer advice to schools in this rapidly changing area. We may be providing new services for the region's school as requirements are clarified.

Web Filtering (Protex)

E2BN have developed and deployed a regional web-filtering service. Based on the open source Dansguardian content filtering system Protex is a fully managed, Becta approved, service available to all schools in the region. The base service is freely available but for schools wishing to have local filtering control and caching there is a charge. See the Protex wiki for more details.

Web Hosting

E2BN are currently (August 2006) investigating the demand, and technical requirements, for a central web-hosting facility available to all schools in the region. If there is sufficient demand the service will be rolled out in 2006/7.
